Chassis Update 05/10

Chassis Progress 12/09

Since the last update, the chassis has been completed, with only small mounts left to be added. The finished chassis came together just after Christmas, then suspension and engine mounts were added. The complete frame weighed in at 30kg, with mounts, an decrease of 8kg over last year.
The process of welding the chassis continued, with a number of different jigs being used:

With the frame complete, the suspension mounts had to be added. These were set at angles specified by the suspension team and welded to the frame.

And then engine mounts.

The next stage for us is to paint the chassis once the final mounting points are on, and then assemble the car

About Formula Student

Formula Student is the European equivalent of Formula SAE in the USA. Run by the IMechE in partnership with the SAE, it is primarily about designing and manufacturing a prototype single seater racing car for a fictitious manufacturing firm, aimed at the non-professional weekend autocross or sprint racer.

As the car is to be designed as an autocross/sprint racing car, acceleration, braking and handling are the key performance priorities, however the car must also be low cost, easy to maintain and reliable.

The competition provides participating students with real-world engineering experience not only in design and manufacture, but in team management, marketing, finance and to work under the pressures of tight time scales, efficient team working and strict specifications. This leads to the development of well rounded, highly talented and motivated young engineers, ready for the industry or other engineering sectors.
